Planning a trip? Try Europe, not Asia

The world is still figuring out how and when to get back on an airplane and travel in the Covid-19 era. But one region is leading the charge when it comes to opening back up: Europe.

In a new analysis, Bloomberg looked at Covid-19 border rules, vaccination rates, local openness and public health requirements in 70 cities around the globe. Led by Madrid, Vienna and Barcelona, Europe topped all other regions, taking nine of the 10 top spots on the list of most accessible cities.

Where’s the U.S.? For now, far behind. Not a single American city made the top 10, largely because of border restrictions the U.S. has put in place. That’s likely to change next month when vaccinated international travelers will be allowed in more freely.

The Asia-Pacific region is at the bottom, with some of the least open destinations in our analysis. Many require quarantines to get in, making travel difficult or impossible for tourists and business visitors. But conditions can change quickly, as Singapore just showed by opening up quarantine-free entry to many visitors.

The new analysis is part of an expansion of our Travel Tracker tool, which now updates data for 70 cities on six continents, analyzing travel rules, vaccination rates and local restrictions.

More than 6.46 billion doses of Covid-19 vaccines have been administered so far, and the latest rate of about 25.5 million a day is roughly equal to the population of Australia. Speaking of Down Under, the country’s leaders have tied many reopening decisions to vaccination progress, and after a slow start the most populous states are rolling toward an 80% vaccination rate among those eligible — currently, people 12 and up. New South Wales emerges from a four-month lockdown on Monday.
