Sigh, New World. I’m trying man, but things are not going great after your initial honeymoon period here.
The latest controversy to hit New World does not have to do with any bugs, but what is apparently an intended mechanic involving the game’s PvE “live” events, invasions, in which demonic forces will storm your land and your faction must defend against them.
Invasions are the PvE equivalent of Wars, where players gather at a fort and have to defend against multiple waves of demons. Win an invasion, get XP and loot, lose an invasion, and the facilities in your settlement or fort will be downgraded. The higher level a zone, the more will be downgraded.
But one player noticed that despite them doing better than anyone else on their server against the demons, getting through more waves than anyone, they were seeing their defenses and crafting stations downgraded more severely than everybody else.
Update: Amazon’s community team has chimed in on this. It is neither an intended mechanic nor an error. They claim it isn’t happening, and that the only way you would be downgraded further is if you are in a territory that’s a higher level. So both the original CS responder and the one responding to my own ticket were wrong in different ways:
Hi everyone,
We wanted to clear up some misinformation on Invasions and how they relate to territory downgrades. How far you make it into an invasion does not determine how many stations will be downgraded if you fail the invasion. The number of downgrades your territory will incur if you fail are tied directly to the territory level of your settlement. The higher your territory level, the more downgrades you will incur if you fail. Successfully repelling an invasion will ensure that no upgrades are regressed.
Individually, you will be more likely to get better rewards the more you contribute to your team. So, contribute to your forts defense and make sure you’re giving the Corrupted all you’ve got! We’re keeping an eye on the tuning of Invasions and we appreciate the feedback we’ve received so far on this feature.

I thought maybe they were just in a higher level region and didn’t understand that mechanic, but no, when they asked Amazon, there is apparently a second, unstated “intended” mechanic in terms of invasion performance:
“When participating in an Invasion, the further players get and the more waves are beaten, the more crafting/refining stations get downgraded if the players fail to beat the Invasion, this is an intended feature.”
So, yes, Amazon is saying that the further you get in an invasion, the “higher stakes” it becomes, and if you lose at say, wave 7, you will get more heavily downgraded than if you lost at wave 1.
The result of this is that for some players on some servers, it may be better not to even bother defending an invasion at all, or to throw early, if they’re not confident they can fully beat it.
I am trying to wrap my brain around why this would be an “intended” mechanic. The only thing I can come up with is that maybe the idea is that if you lose in wave 1, your and your faction are weak enough already where you shouldn’t be overly punished by being downgraded more than if you went further. And yet the inverse feels terrible too, and it seems like the correct answer here should just be flat downgrades across any form of loss, not punishing players for going further. I have my issues with the idea of constant downgrades in general, but that’s probably a discussion for another day.
Invasions have a lot of problems besides this. The minimum level being 50 means that “useless” players can slide into the overly-hard activity when 60s would be better. Also players can potentially sabotage rival factions since it’s not faction-specific. But this downgrade thing is probably the worst aspect I’ve heard, and should be addressed before everything else. All eyes have been on Wars and the issues with those, but punishing players for doing better than others in PvE invasions is certainly high on the priority list of you ask me. Absurd.
Update: I filed my own support ticket with Amazon asking this same downgrade question, and got a response that called it an “error” instead. Here’s the message I received, though I am not sure I can rely on this not being a generic auto-response. That’s pretty much what it sounds like, and is less detailed than the original ticket response that sparked this.
