BOULDER – Freshman Magdalena Luczak and would-be sophomore Cass Gray are both in Soelden, Austria, where the 2021-22 World Cup season will commence this weekend with giant slalom races.

Luczak, a true freshman, is making her third start on the World Cup stage, and second in GS.  She skied at Spindleruv Mlyn in the Czech Republic in March 2019.  For Gray, who's taking this season off from CU to prepare for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, it's her fifth World Cup start with the other four all coming last year, all in GS at Kranjska Gora, Slovakia; Kronplatz, Italy and Jasna, Slovakia.  She registered two top 30 finishes in those four races and had nine World Cup points last season.

"Magdalena and Cass are two of the best young skiers in the world," CU coach Andy LeRoy said. "We're excited to watch them get their seasons underway this weekend in Soelden while the rest of the team hits the snow for the first time at Copper Mountain.  We're aiming to prove that skiing in college and on the World Cup don't have to be mutually exclusive.  Both have aspirations of skiing in Beijing come February and that journey starts this weekend for both of them."

Luczak will be skiing in bib 54 and Gray in bib 66.  There are a total of 75 skiers on the start list.  Should either move into the top 30 in the first run, they will advance to the second run would earn World Cup points with solid second runs.  Both skiers were seeded based on their current FIS points in GS, with Luczak currently holding 19.53 points and Gray 27.03.

Both skiers participated in the World Championships in Cortina D'Ampezzo last season, where Luczak finished 19th and Gray 23rd in the GS race.  Both finishes are believed to be among the top for current, future or former Buffs at a World Championship.

Gray finished her freshman season by winning the individual NCAA Championship in GS.  Both skiers will be attempting to make their respecitve countries Olympic teams this February, Gray for Team Canada and Luzcak for the Polish National Team.

The GS races on the Rattenbach Glacier high above Soelden, Sweden, mark the first race of the World Cup season.  The first run will take place Saturday at 10 a.m. local time, Central European Time, which is 2 a.m. Mountain Time early Saturday morning.  The second run will commence at 1:15 p.m. CET/5:15 a.m. MT.

It appears as if NBC is working hard to come to an agreement with several European rights holders to show World Cup races on the Olympic Channel and Peacock streaming service.  As of two days ago, the situation looked bleak, with Geoff Mintz from Ski Racing reporting that no deal had been reached and that new CEO of the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association Sophie Goldschmidt has been in contact with NBC and working to achieve a positive outcome for this weekend's races in Soelden as well as future races on the calendar.   As of Friday morning, the events in Soelden have appeared under "Live & Upcoming" on the Peacock app.

Meanwhile back in Colorado, the remainder of the alpine team will hit the snow for the first time at Copper Mountain this weekend.  Copper has facilitated early season training for the U.S. National Team and other local, regional and national racers, including college racers, since 2011.  Friday marks the opening day for that in 2021 and the resort expects about 300 athletes to train on the mountain's Copperpolis and Ptarmigan trails.
