Migration from Asia, Europe boosting growth in Huntsville area - al.com

Madison County, home of tech-hub Huntsville, is one of the fastest growing counties in Alabama. Much of that growth over the past half decade has come from people moving in from outside of Alabama - including from Asia and Europe.

Population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show an average of around 21,200 people each year relocated to Madison County between 2014 and 2018, the last year for which data was available.

Of those, more than 12,300 were from outside of Alabama, including more than 1,200 from overseas. Nearly 900 people per year moved to Madison County from Asia during that time, and another 350 plus came from Europe. Madison saw the biggest influx of people from those continents of any county in Alabama over that time.

Madison also saw plenty of migration from nearby counties, including lots of people moving in from elsewhere in Alabama and Tennessee and each year. The U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey estimates nearly 1,700 people per year moved from 29 counties in Tennessee to Madison County. Lincoln County, Tenn., just over the state line from Madison, sent an average of 325 people per year - the most of any county outside Alabama.

But the biggest senders of people were fellow Alabama counties, none bigger than Limestone, just west of Madison and part of the Huntsville metro area. More than 1,700 people per year moved from Limestone to Madison alone, according to the estimates.

Madison also saw a sizable influx of people from Jefferson County, home to Birmingham. Around 1,100 people per year relocated from Jefferson to Madison between 2014 and 2018.

While Jefferson saw significant migration from places like Atlanta, Detroit and Houston over that time period, Madison had more people moving in from the west coast, specifically Southern California and the Seattle area.

Moving out

During the same time period, an average of just 18,400 people moved away from Madison County, leaving a net gain of roughly 2,800 new residents each year.

The biggest destination for people moving away was also Limestone County. More people actually moved to fast-growing Limestone from Madison - around 2,100 per year - than the other way around.

But the majority of people who moved away from Madison - around 10,000 - moved out of state.

The biggest destination outside of Alabama was once again Lincoln County, Tennessee. But former Madison County residents also relocated to places like Harris County, Texas; Santa Barbara County, California; and El Paso County, Colorado.
