“I don’t want to live in the kind of world where we don’t look out for each other. Not just the people that are close to us, but anybody who needs a helping hand. I can’t change the way anybody else thinks, or what they choose to do, but I can do my bit.” This quote was delivered by Author Charles De Lint; however, they are the sentiments of London Overstreet, a 5-year old who has decided to do her part to help others.

When the coronavirus pandemic hit in early 2020, London started watching the news and saw the disaster taking place in this country and was sad to hear about people dying, losing their jobs, being homeless and struggling to provide food for families. London asked her grandmother if she could use her allowance to purchase items for the homeless and everyone having a hard time.

With her grandmother’s permission, London was able to pursue her dream to help others.

London and her grandmother went to a local department store. London told her grandmother, “This is my money so I will do the shopping.”

Hand sanitizers, wipes, toilet paper were some of the items that London put in the cart. When she returned home, London prepared bags with the items, which also included a Bible verse, and continued with her mission of distributing the items to the homeless.

This continues to be a project of London. London knew she was making a difference.

London still pursues her dream of helping people. Even at age 5, she believes she can help change the world and create love and peace. You have shown us that we can all help change the world and while some students might not be willing to donate their allowance, there are other deeds of kindness.

It has been a pleasure sharing London’s desire to make a difference and I encourage all of us to adopt the philosophy of Author Jim Stovall who said, “You need to be aware of what others are doing, applaud their efforts, acknowledge their successes, and encourage them in their pursuits. When we all help one another, everybody wins.”

Margaret Hill is a member of the San Bernardino City Unified School District board.
