VARESE, Italy – Duke rowing's Sophia Greco and Megan Lee competed on the international stage last week. The two Blue Devils represented the United States at the 2022 World Rowing Under 19 and Under 23 Championships, hosted on Lake Varese in Varese, Italy from July 25-31.
Greco, an incoming freshman, was a member of the U.S. coxed four and helped her crew set new records in both the heat and final en route to a gold medal. During the preliminary heat, the U.S led from start to finish, setting a new World Championship Best Time at 6:54.50 to finish almost six seconds clear of the competition. In the final, the U.S claimed the lead in the first 500 meters, and never relinquished it on their way to securing the gold medal. For the second race in a row, the Americans set a new World Championship Best Time with a 6:52.84.
At the U23 level, Lee competed in the women's pair division. A fourth-place finish in the preliminary race with a time of 7:20.23 placed the U.S. in the first repechage race. The Americans narrowly missed out on a place in the A Final during the repechage event, finishing in third place with a time of 7:21.66 to advance to the B Final. Lee and her crewmate secured second place in the B Final with a time of 7:14.61, just over two seconds behind the eventual winner.
The World Rowing Championships are considered the top event for U23 and U19 rowers, attracting up to 1,000 rowers from around the world.
