COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- Former Chattanooga Mocs men's basketball sharp-shooter and current NBA G League member Matt Ryan ('20) has been selected to USA Basketball's February 2022 FIBA World Cup Qualifying Team, the organization announced on Tuesday.
The USA squad will open training camp Feb. 18 in Washington, D.C., and will participate in the second competition window of 2021-23 FIBA World Cup Qualifying games that will see the Americans face Puerto Rico (1-1) on Feb. 24 and Mexico (2-0) on Feb. 27. Both games will be played at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington, D.C.
Tickets for both games are now on sale and range from $10 (plus Ticketmaster fees) to $100 (plus Ticketmaster fees) for courtside seating. For ticket information, visit Ticketmaster or USAB.com/tickets. The full 2021-23 FIBA World Cup Qualifying schedule is available here.
In similar fashion to his Chattanooga days, Ryan currently averages 18.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game for the Grand Rapids Gold squad of the NBA G League. He's posted three games with 33+ points and an additional four games with 21+ points for the Gold since January 5.
During his time at UTC in 2019-20 (graduate transfer from Vanderbilt), Ryan became the first Moc to score 500 (507) points in a season since 2014 and marked just the 16th 500+ point season in the NCAA DI era (1978) for the program. He scored in double figures 28 times including eight times with 20 or more to lead the team in scoring at 15.4 points per game.
A perennial threat from deep, Ryan connected on 88 made threes during the season, which marked the most for a Moc since 2011, and featured 25 games with multiple treys. His 10-straight game streak of two or more threes tied for the fourth-longest run in program history. Ryan was selected the 2019-20 All-Southern Conference Second Team.
Matt Ryan will be returning to the Roundhouse to pay a visit to the current squad's historic season on Thursday night when UTC hosts UNCG at 7 p.m. ET with a chance to clinch the Southern Conference Regular Season title.

The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup marks the first time multiple countries will host the event.
Under the FIBA World Cup qualifying format, two games per window will be played and a total of six windows will be held to qualify teams for the 2023 World Cup. Each competition window is nine days. The first-round competition windows dates were Nov. 22-30, 2021; Feb. 21-March 1, 2022; and June 27-July 5, 2022; while the second-round dates are set for Aug. 22-30, 2022; Nov. 7-15, 2022; and Feb. 20-28, 2023.
