Incoming freshmen Azzi Fudd and Amari DeBerry are the latest Huskies to add gold medals to their resumes, as USA Basketball completed an undefeated run through the FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup with a 70-52 victory over Australia on Sunday. The team successfully defended the United States’ 2019 title, where Paige Bueckers was named the tournament MVP. In Bueckers’ absence, Iowa’s Caitlin Clark took home the 2021 MVP award.
Fudd started six of the United States’ seven games in the tournament, including all four knock-out round games, averaging 9 points and 3.9 assists in just shy of 24 minutes per game (the second most of any Team USA player only to Clark). In the final group stage game against Egypt, Fudd led the team with 19 points on 87.5% shooting from the floor, including four triples. Despite a rough shooting performance in the gold medal game, Fudd played 31 minutes in Team USA’s final outing and added six rebounds to help secure the championship.
DeBerry averaged just 6.7 minutes per game in the tournament but was still impressive on the glass in her limited floor time. In their round of sixteen game against Chinese Taipei, DeBerry led the United States in rebounding with 9 boards in just 12 minutes of action. DeBerry also had a strong offensive performance in the final group stage game against Egypt, adding six points on a perfect 3-for-3 performance from the floor.
In addition to securing a gold medal, Fudd and DeBerry played alongside players that the Huskies will see on the court this NCAA season in some of their toughest non-conference matchups. South Carolina’s Sania Feagin, Oregon’s Te-Hina Paopao and Notre Dame’s Sonia Citron (who was named to the tournament’s All-Star Five) were all part of the Team USA roster.
