The top medical adviser to Japan’s government says the spike in COVID-19 cases should be treated like a natural disaster — with an urgent response to increase testing and contain the spread of the virus.
Back in June, Dr. Shigeru Omi was an early voice urging that the Tokyo Olympics be held without spectators.
Now he says the government is moving too slowly in dealing with the pandemic.
A top adviser to the Tokyo government says the spike in positive cases is “making it impossible to control the situation.”
A panel of medical experts said Thursday the number of severely ill patients is rising rapidly — which could lead to capacity issues with the city’s health care system.
Hospitals have already been cutting back on certain kinds of care and COVID patients with symptoms judged to be “moderate” are no longer being admitted.
The call for stricter emergency measures comes as the country marks some progress in its vaccination program.
This week, Japan’s government announced it had distributed more than 100 million doses of vaccine against COVID-19 — and roughly 82% of residents 65 and older have now been vaccinated.
But the overall vaccination rate remains low compared to other advanced economies, now reaching just a third of the population.
Government figures show most of the new cases are among people in their 20s and 30s.
