Abhishek Verma won gold in the men's compound event at the Archery World Cup in Paris after defeating U.S.'s Kris Schaff in a dramatic final that needed a shoot-off to decide the winner.
This was India's first medal in the Paris World Cup. India can win as many as three more medals on Sunday as Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das have made the final of the recurve mixed team event, where they'll face Netherlands. India will also be competing in the women's recurve team final against Mexico. The Indian tam comprises of Kumari, Ankita Bhakat and Komalika Bari.
Kumari also has a chance to complete an unprecedented three-peat as she has also made the women's recurve semis in the individual event, where she'll line up against Mexico's Ana Vazquez.
Verma edged Schaff 10-9 in the shoot-off after both the archers were tied at the end of the regulation final at a score of 148-148. Verma is the first Indian man to win two golds in the men's compound individual event at Archery World Cups. He had previously won gold at the individual event in Wroclaw in 2015.
This is Verma's third individual medal at an Archery World Cup. He had also won silver in Salt Lake City in 2018. Verma has also won two medals in the men's compound individual event at World Cup Finals, a silver in Mexico City in 2015 and a bronze in Samsun in 2018.
In the final, Verma led by two points against Schaff after three of the five ends but Schaff drew level by outscoring Verma 30-29 in the fourth and fifth ends, which necessitated a shoot-off. Verma had earlier defeated Russia's Anton Bulaev 146-138 in the semi-final.
This was Verma's first appearance at a World Cup in almost two years, with Indian compound archers having not taken pat in any of the two previous World Cups this year. All the four World Cups in 2020 were cancelled owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Verma had earlier finished 11th in the qualification round after tallying a total of 706. Verma has also won four bronzes in the compound mixed team event previously at World Cups with Jyothi Surekha Vennam. They won bronze in each of the four World Cups held in 2018 and also won a bronze in the mixed team event at the World Cup Final in Samsun that year.
Jayanta Talukdar also has two individual golds at Archery World Cups but his golds have come in the men's individual event.
