Online interest in China's news agencies fell 5.2 points to 17.9 per cent, compared with 39.6 per cent for the United States.

China's national newspapers gained more attention, though, edging up 10.5 points with a 4.9 per cent share. This may have been due to considerable regional interest in the Hong Kong-based The South China Morning Post, which is not state-controlled although it does have a Chinese owner.

Interest in Chinese television broadcasters slipped 0.6 points to 1.9 per cent.
