#1: 4.5 quake: 3km WSW of South El Monte, CA, USA, 19 Sep 2020 06h38 - 1165 reports
A widely felt shallow magnitude 4.5 quake hit LA shortly before midnight, at 11:38 pm local time.
Its epicenter was just 15 km east of downtown LA's city center near South San Gabriel. Hundreds of thousands if not millions of people probably felt the quake as thousands of user reports already have reached USGS and our service.
Near the epicenter, people will have experienced moderate to strong shaking, while weak to light shaking could be felt in the wider LA area.
Although it was the strongest quake in the area in almost 3 decades (since the very strong magnitude 6.7 quake near Reseda on 17 Jan 1994), it was not a dangerous quake and should not have caused significant damage, except fallen objects from shelves etc.
During the first hour, we received more than 2000 reports from people in the LA area who felt the quake. Most described the tremor as a rattling vibration that lasted 5-10 seconds.
In many areas near the epicenter, things fell from shelves in houses and stores, but there seems to be no major damage. Small cracks opened on some streets as well.
According to seismologists, the quake likely resulted from a movement along the Puente Hills blind thrust fault, which runs beneath the center of LA and therefore is one of the most dangerous ones in the LA area.
A thrust fault is one where the 2 adjacent crustal blocks on either side of the fault plane are pushed together and moved partly one over another as a result of compression. A bling fault refers to the situation when the fault fracture is not reaching the surface. In the LA area, such blind faults are related to a curvature in the the nearby San Andreas fault.
In addition to fallen objects and cracks in streets, many people found new small cracks in walls as a result of the quake:
Nothing like finding the tiny cracks in your apartment walls and ceiling have grown quite a bit after a moderate earthquake that could still just be a foreshock to a bigger one. pic.twitter.com/FQqw80hf3M

#2: 5.3 quake: 46 Km SSE of Irákleion, Greece, 18 Sep 2020 16h28 - 287 reports
A moderately strong earthquake hit near the south coast of Crete this evening, at 19:28 local time. The earthquake epicenter was located 50 km south of the regional capital Heraklion and the quake had a depth of around 50 km.
While the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) indicates a magnitude of 5.3, other agencies reported magnitudes of up to 5.9, although NOA's regional national network probably provides the most reliable data.
Thanks to the moderate depth, no significant damage was caused by the quake, but it was felt widely over all of Crete, especially in the Heraklion region, but also on nearby islands.
The earthquake had a relatively long duration of up to 30 seconds, which most people felt as a light shaking.
