England are up to third in the latest FIFA World Rankings, up from fourth a month before. This ties their highest ever ranking, which was achieved back in 2012. It also stands in contrast to the standing of England's women's team, who currently lie eighth — their lowest position since 2010.
Belgium remain first. They have been top of the rankings since 2018, despite failing to win an international tournament in that period.
England’s rise up the table has been facilitated by the slow descent of France, who were second prior to the European Championships.
France exited that tournament at the Round of 16 stage, and subsequently drew with both Ukraine and Bosnia and Herzegovina during World Cup qualifying at the beginning of the month. This has seen them leapfrogged by both Brazil and England.
Although Italy won Euro 2020, they are only fifth. Portugal have swapped places with Spain, improving to seventh, while Denmark also join the top 10.
In the top 10, all but three teams — Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico — are European.
The USA drop out of that group, having sat 10th prior to disappointing draws against El Salvador and Canada. They are now 13th. Canada are rewarded for that 1-1 draw by rising eight places, from 59th to 51st.
Elsewhere in the rankings, Wales stay 19th while Scotland and Northern Ireland rise to 45th and 47th respectively. The Republic of Ireland fall to 50th.
Libya are the biggest climbers, gaining 12 places to now sit 110th. This follows two wins in World Cup qualifying, over Angola and Gabon.
