LATVIA – Both Canada and the United States improved to 2-0 at the 2021 FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup on Sunday in Latvia, with Creighton freshmen Ryan Nembhard and Ryan Kalkbrenner contributing to each victory.

Ryan Nembhard finished with 11 points, five assists and two rebounds in 29 minutes of action as Canada improved to 2-0 with a 100-75 victory vs. Japan. Japan entered the tournament ranked No. 27 in the world at the U19 level.

Nembhard closed out the first half with two free throws in the closing seconds to help Canada take a 40-33 lead into the break. The Canadians outscored Japan 36-21 in the third quarter to break loose, with Nembhard connecting on a three-pointer to make it 58-38. He opened the fourth quarter with Canada's first six points in a span of 85 seconds, including a three-pointer and a turnaround jumper, as Canada cruised to victory.

Arizona's Bennedict Mathurin led Canada with a game-high 30 points on 11-of-15 shooting, while Purdue's Zach Edey owned 14 points and 15 rebounds for his second straight double-double.

Nembhard made 3-of-10 field goal attempts, including 2-of-5 three-pointers, and was also 3-for-4 at the charity stripe. His five assists led the team. He continues to lead the team with 4.0 assists per game and is also averaging 14.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per contest at the 2021 FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup.

In a rematch of the FIBA U19 World Cup gold medal match from 2019, Ryan Kalkbrenner started the United States' lopsided 100-52 victory vs. Mali on Sunday. Kalkbrenner had a team-high three blocks and also contributed six rebounds, two points and two assists. He made 1-of-4 field goal attempts and was a healthy +23 in 14 minutes of action.

Kalkbrenner's lone basket came with 8:31 left in the third quarter, when he redirected an offensive rebound and tipped it back in as the Americans stretched their lead to 59-36. The US, which  hasn't trailed in either game during this tournament, raced to leads of 7-0 and 11-3 as Kalkbrenner owned a pair of assists in the first three minutes. Mali trailed just 31-28 after two minutes of action in the second quarter before the US used a game-ending 69-24 burst to crush the world's No. 20th-ranked team at the U19 level.

Six Americans scored in double-figures, including 14 points each by Jaden Ivey (Purdue), Caleb Furst (Purdue) and Kenneth Lofton Jr. (Louisiana Tech). The victory improved the USA to 100-14 in U19 competitions and improved USA's U19 record in Fourth of July games to 5-0.

Through two games in Latvia, Kalkbrenner is averaging 4.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots per contest under head coach Jamie Dixon (TCU).

Ranked No. 1 in the world in the U19 rankings, Kalkbrenner and Team USA return to the court on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. Central with a game vs. Australia that can be watched at https://youtu.be/0VnTUmSmA58.  The teams met in a scrimmage on June 30th less than 24 hours after the Americans arrived in Latvia, with Australia outscoring the US by a 78-72 margin.
