COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Sunday’s mass vaccination clinic at the Broadmoor World Arena has been postponed due to dangerously cold temperatures Sunday.
The temperature stood at -7 in downtown Colorado Springs at 9 a.m. Sunday -- around the time seniors over 70 would have been lining up in cars for the drive-thru clinic. According to our hour by hour forecast, temperatures might not make it to the other side of zero at all on Sunday.
Centura Health, which is putting on the clinic in conjunction with COVIDCheck Colorado, said the clinic would be rescheduled for the following weekend.
“Anyone scheduled to receive their vaccine at the Broadmoor World Arena on Feb. 14 will automatically be invited to receive their first dose on Feb. 20 at their originally scheduled time. Participants will receive a confirmation via email; there is no need to call. The event is invite-only.”
The clinic did go on as planned Saturday despite the single-digit temperature, with more than 2,300 vaccinated. Gov. Jared Polis made the trip to Colorado Springs to attend the event.
“Normally, I would feel cold because it’s 2 degrees, but I’m just so excited, the blood is rushing through my veins, that I just feel warm with excitement to see every car with one or two people that are going to get vaccinated and protected,” a jubilant Polis told reporters. “Just really exciting to see!”
Mayor John Suthers teased the governor for his cheerfulness.
“You know, unlike the governor, I’m cold and excited. He’s just excited but I’m cold and excited.”
And praised everyone who helped with the “incredible amount of logistics” to get the event up and running.
“I am very optimistic -- the governor and I were just talking about this. We feel things are ramping up, and the pace at which we are attacking this problem is increasing dramatically, and I’m convinced that sooner rather than later things are back to normal.”
The rescheduled clinic next weekend remains strictly for those who were scheduled to get vaccinated on Sunday. No walk-ups will be allowed. The original event was invite-only.
